synopsis

in order to survive in a distant future, where the galaxy has been stripped of nearly all its resources, a man harvests the energy he needs the only way he knows how.

why this story?

helldiver is a small glimpse into the larger universe I have been working on for several years called Tales From Rivuus, which I plan to developed and create lots of films inside of. The universe is the hopeful version of the Grim Dark Future from Warhammer 40k, where the universe can be just as dark, but with a healthy dose of hope.

what is the story behind the project?

This was a project that started as a single vfx test shot I wanted to attempt in blender, and slowly evolved into a full fledged short film. Originally I found a really cool stock footage shot of a volcano, the first wide you see in the film, and I just wanted to do a test shot of a ship landing next to the volcano, that was it. But it looked so cool when I was done I decided to add a few more shots of the ship flying towards the volcano. Then sending out a little ship. Then I figured let's just send it and make a whole film! So I wrote a script, got my friend Nomé Naku who composed an absolutely incredible original score for the film!

She composed the absolutely incredible music for the film!

  • editing me

I edited it all together in premiere pro

  • vfx & 3d animation me

I animated and composited the ships and the beam using a mix of blender and after effects

  • sound design me

I did all the sound design

  • narration me

I decided to do the voice myself and think it came out pretty good.

  • ship models rasmus Poulsen (aka technouveau)

I purchased a few of his beautiful ship models for this project.

I got the footage from three different cinematographers:

any interesting challenges?

The biggest challenge I faced on this project was trying to figure out how to fit everything together while the project kept evolving. Initially the film had no dialogue but as it came together it looked so cool I knew I had to write a badass story to go along with the visuals, which proved to be very difficult to write something that was interesting, fit what was on screen, and matched the timing of it all. But I think I pulled it off!
